The Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain and spinal cord process painful and nonpainful signals.

Fibromyalgia has many symptoms that tend to vary from person to person. The main symptom is widespread pain.

There may be periods when your fibromyalgia symptoms get better or worse, depending on factors such as:

your stress levels

changes in the weather

how physically active you are

If you think you have fibromyalgia, visit your GP.

Treatment is available to ease some of the symptoms, although it's unlikely they'll ever disappear completely.

Widespread Pain

This may be felt throughout your body, but could be worse in particular areas, such as your back or neck.

The pain is likely to be continuous, although it may be better or more severe at different times.

The pain could feel like:

an ache

a burning sensation

a sharp, stabbing pain

Fatigue

People with fibromyalgia often awaken tired, even though they report sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain, and many patients with fibromyalgia have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.

Cognitive Difficulties

A symptom commonly referred to as "fibro fog" impairs the ability to focus, pay attention and concentrate on mental tasks.

Other symptoms that people with fibromyalgia sometimes experience include:

dizziness and clumsiness

feeling too hot or too cold – this is because you're not able to regulate your body temperature properly

an overwhelming urge to move your legs (restless legs syndrome)

tingling, numbness, prickling or burning sensations in your hands and feet

in women, unusually painful periods

anxiety

depression

The pain, fatigue, and poor sleep quality associated with fibromyalgia can interfere with your ability to function at home or on the job. The frustration of dealing with an often-misunderstood condition also can result in depression and health-related anxiety.
